To change the oil on your EU2000i Inverter generator first run the unit until it's warmed up - turn it off and let it cool down for 30 minutes. Running the generator will heat the oil. The heated oil is thinner and will drain more easily and completely from the engine.

10 Easy Steps to Changing Oil

1. Secure the gas cap and turn the engine switch and vent lever to the off position. This will reduce the possibility of fuel leaking.

2. Remove the side cover by loosening the screw.

3. Remove the oil dipstick.

4. At this point you have two options. Pack the bottom of your generator with "rags" or "paper towels". This will stop the oil from running down the engine and into the bottom of your generator as you are tipping it over.

5. Quickly, tilt the generator over a drain pan and allow it to empty. There is less than 1/2 a quart of oil in this unit and it will drain fast.

6. Tilt the unit back in a upright position after all the oil has drained.

7. At this point use a funnel to put the proper amount of new oil back into the generator. You will find that Honda list the capacity at 0.42 US quarts or 13.5 US Ounces for the EU2000i Inverter Generator.

8. Once the proper amount of oil has been installed screw the dipstick back into the unit and wipe off all the excess oil off.

9. Install the cover and turn the engine switch and vent to the ON position. Run the generator for a minute and turn off. Remove the cover to and look for any slow discharge or escape of oil. If all appears to be clean and oil free reinstall the cover.

10. Wash your hands with soap and water. You have completed your oil change in 10 easy steps.

Overall, the Honda EU2000i inverter generator is a very easy unit to maintain and will offer years of usage. The cost of time and oil is minimal to the cost of a new generator.

Note: Two oil changes or one quart of improperly disposed of oil will contaminate 250,000 gallons of drinking water: a year's supply for 12.5 people!

Power generators are increasingly becoming a must-have in many aspects of human lives. Inverter generators are a relatively new technological innovation as far as power generators are concerned. They are basically similar to the traditional non-inverter types but with one twist, it gives the generator the capability to vary its engine speed depending on the load so that it can save more on fuel and also reduce the noise generated. Like its non-inverter counterparts, it also utilizes the principle of a rotating magnetic field on a coil of wire to generate electricity. The difference lies in the fact that the output in an inverter generator is created by a 3-phase inversion process from alternating current to direct current and back to alternating current. The final phase produces that so called "clean power" that these types of generator are becoming more popular for.

Also, the magnets used in the generator engine have been changed into smaller yet powerful ones that enabled manufacturers to reduce the size of the units; which in turn makes the equipment lighter, smaller and definitely more portable.

And since the generator is producing clean and stable electrical current, it is considered very suitable for powering delicate and voltage-sensitive electronic systems like computers, laptops, etc. Although non-inverter generators are also considered suitable for this type of job (they also produce nice and pure sine wave currents), an extra layer of safety is still very welcome.

One disadvantage seen in this type of power generators is its price. Currently, it is significantly more expensive compared to its non-inverter counterparts but this may be attributed to the fact that it is a fledgling segment and a relatively infant technology. There are cheap inverters available in the market but they may be of low quality and may not really produce the "clean power" that they are known for.

If you are going to buy an inverter type power generator, it might be a good idea to stick to the top brands for now. They may be more expensive but you get the quality you should expect from such equipment.
